History of the Teddy Bear
The year was 1902, and America’s beloved President Theodore Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi. An avid outdoorsman, President Roosevelt was renowned for his hunting skills.
But on this particular Mississippi day there was no luck to be had. The hunting party, fearing President Roosevelt’s disappointment, captured a Louisiana bear cub and tied it to a nearby tree.
The President was then called upon to shoot the bear, but with the heart of a true hunter Roosevelt refused and ordered the bear be set free.
Clifford Berryman, a cartoonist for the Washington Post, captured the moment with a wonderful illustration titled “Drawing the line in Mississippi”.
Seeing the cartoon in the newspaper, New York store owner Mr. Mitchom and his seamstress wife, decided to make the bears to sell in their shop. These hand stitched bears sold very well, and Mr. Mitchom decided to write a letter to President Roosevelt asking permission to name his new bear Teddy.
The President gave his consent and history was made.
Congratulations! You are the proud owner of this special once in a lifetime edition, collectible 100th Anniversary Teddy Bear. Truly a masterpiece of quality and detail to be cherished and adored, the ultimate addition to your Teddy Bear Collection.
